Back again!

Filed under: Fitness, Personal, Training — ladlam @ 11:44 am

Yep, I’m back. Didn’t fall under a bus or anything like that!

Honestly, I’ve just been enjoying not doing any workouts. It’s always nice to have a good break from spending hours a week in a cold garage. I’ve also been pretty time-poor lately between work, Gumdo and a personal business venture I’m trying to get off the ground.

I guess that’s a bit of a cop out, I made myself a promise a long time ago that I’d always make time for my fitness, but I have been! I’ve been going out at lunch every day for the last few weeks to practice my Gumdo patterns for 20-30 minutes, so the fitness is still there, I just haven’t been doing any strength training lately.

Speaking of Gumdo, dad and I had our first class 2 weeks ago which went pretty well. I think we tried to do a bit too much in an hour, and the students probably walked a away a bit overwhelmed, but they all came back (all 3 of them) last week, along with another 3 newbies, for more. Last week we worked out a shorter class format which worked a lot better, and I have to admit I got a real buzz from the class. I’m really starting to look forward to starting my own class!

Back on the fitness topic, I think it’s time I got back in to a solid routine. Rather than just doing some weights to bulk up or look better or anything like that, I’m going to put together a training plan that is Gumdo specific. My plan at this point is to have three stages: strength, endurance and finally speed. They will go in that order. To begin with, I’m thinking 2 weeks each would be a good trial period. If the plan works well, then I will look at 4 to 6 weeks for each phase.

I’m still writing out a list of exercises and activities to include though, so I won’t post the specific plan just yet…

Also today I’ll try to get a post up about meditation, as I promised it to Rob a few weeks ago. Sorry Rob, I haven’t forgotten honest!

Hope everyone is doing well!

26/05/09 – It’s all crap!

Filed under: Fitness, Nutrition, Personal, Training, weights, Workouts — Tags: , , , , , — ladlam @ 9:17 pm

Alright well today I finally admitted it to myself. Everything I’ve done in the last 6 months has now been undone with 4 weeks or so of bad eating. I’m afraid my mindset of late has probably slipped back to my fat self. Rather than the 10ish BF% I’m probably sitting around 19 or 20%. Not horrible but I’m still extremely disappointed in myself.

But enough feeling sorry for myself. My plan is just to eat healthy and try to get my mind in control of my stomach, instead of the other way around. Paleo? No. I’m afraid paleo eating requires a level of discipline that I’m not really confident I have at the moment. Will I return to it? I definitely intend to, but for the next month or more I really want to prove to myself that I do still have some self discipline. On top of that, it’s actually very expensive to eat paleo, so once Megan and I have a decent budget worked out, and once I’m happy with where my mind is at, then I will look at returning to a paleo diet.

Training wise, I’ll be sticking with resistance work. It’s hard work, I can pick up some weights any time and I just really enjoy it. My gumdo training is certainly more than enough to give me a good cardio hit at the moment.

I won’t be taking any progress pictures or anything of that kind because I really just need to do this for myself. I’m not doing it to prove any particular diet works, or to track muscle gain, or anything like that so sorry if you’re interested in seeing pictures but I won’t be doing them.

Anyway, on to today’s workout:

  • Bench press – 5×5 @ 90lbs
  • Bent over row – 5×5 @ 90lbs
  • Deadlift – 5×5 @ 110lbs
  • High pull – 5×5 @ 110lbs
  • 10 minutes meditation

Felt pretty good afterwards. 110lbs isn’t really enough to push myself for a deadlift, but that’s all I have so there’s not much option there. Don’t think I enjoy the high pull with dumbells, it’s not quite the same as with a barbell, but it still worked everything pretty well so it doesn’t matter too much.

Back in to it

So this week I have been battling my own cravings hardcore. It was a bit of a shock to come on to WordPress for the first time in almost a week and read that everyone else is having a similarly hard time.

Generally speaking, I eat food because I need it. Sure, I like to enjoy it from time to time, but taste is not really that important to me. Food is a fuel and that’s how I treat it.

WHY then, can I not wrap my head around this paleo diet? I quite like eating meat, especially chicken and steak, and I don’t mind eating a bunch of veggies. I love fruit, quite enjoy a handful of nuts (teehee), and am not that attached to pasta or noodles. Honestly, that’s the core of the diet, but for some reason I can’t stick to it. Literally a day in to it, the cravings for chocolate or something sugary get so strong that I just give up, and this kind of makes me ashamed.

12 months ago, I would have said I have iron willpower and nothing can sway me. Lately, not so much…

So what’s the problem? I honestly am not sure. I think maybe I just don’t have the motivation I used to. I’m now quite trim, and have at least a good outline of a 6 pack going, so I don’t really have the need to improve my physical appearance. This is pretty shallow of me, but it’s the truth. I can physically do most things I want to, and I look healthy, so what more can I ask for?

I guess it’s worth mentioning that I have been particularly tired lately, and I’m sure we can all agree it’s hard to focus on something difficult when you’re tired, but this is a pretty poor excuse to be honest, and I won’t let myself use it as a way out.

I’m firmly of the opinion that if any of us have strong enough motivation, we can do pretty much anything, so I guess what it boils down to is what is my motivation? I’ve been doing some thinking and have come to the following conclusion:

In 4 weeks, I’m going to have a pretty gruelling physical challenge – my Gumdo instructors course will consist of 3 days worth of training. Each day will be split in to 3 sessions, lasting 2 hours each, so that’s 6 hours of training a day for 3 days. If I want to be truely ready for this, I’m going to need to be fit. Not just pretty fit, but crazy fit. If I want to get that fit, I need to fuel my body properly. I know the paleo diet is the exact fuel my body craves, because as soon as I put shit in it, I feel like shit.

So what I’m working to is, I want to be completely paleo from now until after that course. That’s the weekend after easter, so I will have 23 days to get my shit together and keep it together. No excuses, no ifs, no buts, that’s just going to be how it is.

Now I just hope I can stick to it.

Oh, by the way, I gorged myself on chocolate biscuits today, and now I feel crap. I’m going to try and remember this feeling next time I get cravings ;)

Ahhh Sunday

No workout to post today guys, although I did have a good day nutrition wise. Bacon and eggs for breakfast (how many times have you gotten to say a good nutritional day started with bacon!!), a chicken wrap (ok the wrap was less desirable) for lunch and chicken laksa for dinner.

The laksa had noodles in it which wasn’t great, and the wrap wasn’t great either, but aside from that it was a good day. Weekends are always hard, because at work the only thing I have to eat is what I’ve taken, but on the weekend it’s easy to just pop up to the shops…

But Megan’s back now, and she says hi to everyone! Now she can get back to cooking my delcious meals :D

Also, just for some entertainment, here’s a picture of my left forearm after last nights workout.

Still some work on correct form required here...

Mid-week update

Well guys the diet is going pretty well as of Wednesday morning. I was craving pretty much everything pretty hardcore yesterday – caffeine, sugar, cola, any of those would have been fine… On the up side, the ol’ caffeine headache didn’t come on until about 4pm instead of 10am so that was nice :D

Dinner on Monday was pretty craptastic, just not all that flavourful and the meat wasn’t very good quality. Last night on the other hand, Megan cooked up some macadamia nut crusted salmon, which was tasty beyond belief. A huge surprise considering I never really liked fish at all!

In terms of snacks, I’m chomping on some mixed nuts (no peanuts or cashews), eating heaps of fruit and the odd can of tuna. Lunch consists of some meat (usually chicken) and a big plate of salad.

So far except from craving things with real taste, I feel great. A nice constant energy level, instead of peaks around meal times. I’m also less tired in the morning, although I’d still rather be in bed than getting ready for work. ;)

Still having a rest from the kettlebells, but I did go to gumdo last night, and had a pretty good class. We did these “challenges” which started off with a race to do x many cuts. We did it in pairs, and the loser sat down, and so on till only 1 person was left standing. I came 3rd here, which was ok seeing as the person I lost to was a beginner not doing his techniques correctly, plus he did 2/3 as many as me.

The second challenge was to do as many 4 finger (on each hand) fingertip pushups in x seconds, with partners again. I won this one :D Obviously all my many pushups paid off. I’ll tell you what though, my shoulders were pretty sore and tired afterwards, and I felt like I’d broken the tips of most of my fingers!

Well that’s it for me. Hope you’re all doing well, and keep working hard!

A quiet weekend

Filed under: Nutrition, Personal — ladlam @ 9:10 am

Fear not, I’m not dead!

Actually I had a pretty quiet weekend with lots of bad eating. Burger and chips for lunch, and a rendang curry for dinner yesterday which is possibly my favourite meal of all time.

Unfortunately after some drama on Saturday, and unrelenting rain all weekend, I just couldn’t muster the energy to do even a single workout, so needless to say I’ve recovered pretty well and am ready to destroy myself tonight.

In other news, today the paleo diet starts. Breakfast started off well with two friend eggs, a small bowl of blueberries and raspberries, a carrot and a small handful of nuts. Honestly, I feel much better already. More alert, not as full but still satisfied. I’m missing my morning coffee already though.

Anyway, just a short catch up post. Stay tuned for tonights workout.

Some changes

It’s now been about 7 weeks (as of tomorrow) since I started blogging.

My original aim of the blog was to prove (mostly to myself) that it’s possible (infact easy) to stay fit, strong and healthy without having to fork out every month for an expensive gym membership.

I feel at this point that I’ve absolutely proved that to myself, if not others (if others disagree then that’s their business) and that at this point I can put down my pen and go do something else with my life…

HAH!

Yeah right. In fact, I’m just getting started. As of right now, my “Nutrition” category contains 4 posts, while my “Training” category contains 37.

The main reason for this is that I’ve always considered nutrition a bit of a no-brainer. You eat healthy (lets be honest, you all know what healthy is and so does everyone else, even if they don’t admit it), and you feel and look healthy.

This is most definitely going to change. Having seen how quickly I’ve shed off a few body fat %’age points after only minor tweaks to my diet over the last 7 weeks, I’m beginning to realise just how important eating correctly is. For this reason, the next 6 weeks will now focus mainly on diet.

No, this doesn’t mean I’m stopping my workouts. I won’t even be changing them dramatically, they’ll just be getting a little bit less focus here while I log down how I’m feeling, what I’m eating and so on.

The ‘Diet’

First and foremost, this is not a “diet” as the media would refer to it. I don’t intend to eat this way for a month, then go eat some chips. If the diet is sustainable and worthwhile, then it will be a lifestyle change for good.

Now, the diet I’m trying has several names: the paleolithic  or paleo diet, the caveman diet, the warrior diet and the hunter gatherer diet. There’s others, but there are better things to discuss.

The main theory behind the paleo diet is this: farming is a relatively new invention – estimated at roughly 10,000 years old.

Ok, that’s not that “new”, but consider the fact that it takes a few hundred thousand years at least for a species to evolve in any significant way. Also consider the fact that for at least several hundred years, science and medicine will have significantly reduced the effect of any kind of evolution – survival of the fitest no longer truely applies to us.

Taking both of these things in to account, it is logical to conclude that as a species, there is no way our bodies could possibly have evolved around our diet at this point. Our bodies are not prepared for the high intake of simple carbs, trans fats and “toxins” in general (I hate that word, but it’s appropriate here).

Believe it or not, included on this list are several foods which would otherwise be labelled healthy – grains, beans and potatoes!

All three of the above contain high levels of chemicals that are designed to stop animals eating them – this is their protection mechanism. You’ll notice that none of those foods are edible without being cooked (some people eat raw potatoes – they’ll die soon though, so I’m safe in saying that) – this is because the cooking process kills enough of those chemicals for them to be edible, however they’re still quite unhealthy.

So what CAN you eat?

Most people’s (and mine) first reaction to this diet is “Wow, so you can’t eat much of anything then?” – so wrong!

The formula for success is quite simple, and easily summarised by a website I found yesterday. Basically you ask yourself two questions:

  • If you were trapped in a forrest with no (or limited) tools, would this food be readily available?
  • Is the food edible without being cooked, regardess of whether you intend to cook it or not?

If the answer to both questions is yes, then you can eat it! Generally speaking, this will include the following:

  • Lean meats
  • Most vegitables
  • Fruit
  • Nuts (not including peanuts which are legumes, or cashews for some reason)

Generally speaking, the following should be avoided:

  • Grains (the occasional grain is ok, but not in large quantities)
  • Pasta, rice etc
  • Potatoes (even sweet potatoes :( )
  • Beans and legumes
  • Processed foods or foods containing lots of preservatives
  • Food with added salt
  • Simple sugars

One thing that’s immediately obvious – this diet is very low in carbs. Why? Because simple carbs are pretty hard to come by naturally. Probably the only two simple sugary carbs I can think of that are naturally obtainable would be honey and maple syrup, both of which would generally be a rare treat.

Will this affect my workouts? No.

The body is fueled by calories, not carbohydrates. While carbs are a great source of calories, they’re high gi and burn very quickly, whereas calories obtained via fat and protein are both low gi, thus I should have more energy throughout the day, rather than having energy spikes around meal times, and the lows in between.

Better yet, a low carb, high protein diet stimulates muscle growth! Who doesn’t want that, right?

Prove it then!

Alright…

Thinking about a group of people that would adhere to this diet now, African tribes come to mind.

How many overweight African tribes have you seen getting around? (Alright smartass, I know they don’t walk around local streets :D )

What about Kenyans? We all know Kenyans are skinny, muscular and fit, and no the reason isn’t just because they’re Kenyans – it’s because their diet rocks! I don’t think they’re sitting around eating mars bars and chocolate donuts.

Another example, has anyone seen any pictures recently of Jason Statham (the star of Transporter 1, 2 and 3)? When training for transporter 3, Statham’s trainer put him on the paleo diet.

Jason Statham in Transporter 3

Jason Statham in Transporter 3

As you can see, he’s looking pretty good. Obviously this will involve some pretty hardcore resistance training as well, but that’s doable…

The workouts

My workouts will more or less stay unchanged. The exercises that a paleo man would have faced would be pretty simple: occasional short bursts of sprinting, combined with lifting heavy shit over his head.

Essentially my workout looks a lot like that anyway, so the one thing I plan to change will be including sprints, either running or skipping, in as many workouts as possible.

So there we have it – the outline of my new diet. There are still a lot of things I’m unclear about – particularly whether I can or can’t eat specific foods. Onions are a great example. People often eat onions raw, but I don’t know whether that’s specifically good or bad for you. More reading should clear some of this stuff up though!

Initially I’ll try this diet for 6 weeks.  I want to give it a good chance to see any changes. Some things will be hard – giving up coffee for example – but I’m sure after 6 weeks I’ll be feeling pretty good.

If anybody is still awake, I’d love to hear what your take is on the paleo diet, so please post some comments!

Ughhhh (a waaahhhhh post)

Filed under: Nutrition, Personal — ladlam @ 9:24 am

Honestly guys, I’m struggling at the moment… My alarm went off at 5.05, I got up, then I got back in bed and slept till my normal get-up time (not the turkish kind). Then I almost fell asleep about 500 times while my collegue drove me to work. I am just so incredibly tired at the moment.

I’m hoping I’m so damned tired because on Sunday it was 42 degrees, and Monday it was 18. That sort of sudden weather change can really knock a guy around I tell ya!

Anyway, I’m having trouble motivating myself to work out. Once I’m there, I hit it with avengence but it’s just getting in to the garage in the first place, especially when I’m running on about 6 hours of sleep. Luckily I have Gumdo tonight so my day won’t be entirely exercise-free!

In other news, after having a chat to my lovely partner last night we’ll be starting the paleolithic diet from next week. I don’t think Megan will follow it too strictly, and I don’t blame her, but I’ll be doing my best. I’ll post about it later after I’ve read up on it some more.

Kettlebells and raging infernos

I will confess, I didn’t do a workout today. It was hot and I was oh so lazy – besides, packing needed to be done, and then I had to hide in the bedroom with the air con on all day.

Apparently this has been the hottest heatwave in Sydney on record, but the heat here has been nothing compared to Melbourne. They’ve seen nothing but 40+ degree days for the last 2 weeks I think – that’s 108+ for the imperial lovers.

As tends to happen in Australia, that has now resulted in some horrific bushfires. There are entire towns in Victoria that simply don’t exist any more – they’ve been burnt to the ground, houses, shops, town squares and all. The last I heard, 66 were confirmed dead and they haven’t even started looking yet – the fires are still raging away.

Here’s a picture of what I’m talking about, for those of you that have been lucky enough to have never experienced something like this:

Unfortunately this sort of thing usually happens once every 4 years or so, but not quite on this scale. The last fires this bad were in Victoria were in 1983 – 47 people died in those fires.

Kettlebells!

Jason of run4change asked me yesterday what a kettlebell is – Jason what you see above is a kettlebell!

It is essentially a cannonball with a handle – a Russian fitness tool that’s known for being a brutal conditioning and muscle building workout.

You might look at it and thing “Why not just use dumbells?” – fair point, but kettlebell exercises are aimed fairly solidly at “core” workouts (I hate that word by the way). Most of the power in the lifts is generated from the hips, and strengthens the back and stomach beyond belief. It also conditions the shoulders better than anything else I’ve ever tried.

I could write for another hour about how great kettlebells are, but at the end of the day you won’t truely understand until you pick one up and try it. And don’t write it off as a bodybuilding tool – kettlebellers (or gireviks) also build an amazing fitness level, so even if you’re training for running, swimming, riding (Lance Armstrong has included kettlebells in his comeback training) or just to create bear-like strength I assure you kettlebell training will help!

Oh, and it’s great for losing weight too :D

The benefits of a rest

I’m posting this really just for the benefit of myself, so I can come back and read it next week when I’m in a similar mood to the one I was in last night.

I’ve become a bit frustrated with the bit of persistent fat hovering over the bottom 2 “packs” of my stomach. In fact Megan even commented last night “When’s this bit going to disappear?” – no Megan I wasn’t frustrated because of you, I was thinking the same thing!

I don’t know if I was particularly disheartened because I’d worked so hard this week (2 workouts Monday, 3 on Tuesday and Wednesday) and was a bit physically exhausted, or just because it was hot and disguisting last night, but for what ever reason I was down in the dumps a bit. In fact giving my stomach a bit of a poke, it felt like I had put on fat rather than lost some! Oh, and I was craving the chocolate covered scotch finger biscuits in the cupboard at work hardcore too.

Well anyway, yesterday was a rest day (aside from Gumdo practice at lunch time) which I think I was thoroughly in need of. And guess what? Today I feel great. Giving myself the very scientific poke-in-the-stomach test there’s most definitely some trimming up going on down there, and on top of that I have more energy and can feel the muscles working hard to repair themselves.

So today I’m going to give myself another rest, just to make full advantage of the short break in my workout schedule, and get back in to it tomorrow. This does mean I’ll most likely be working out in 40+ degree heat (it’s set to hit 43C or 109F) over the weekend, but that’s ok. I’ll just have to make an effort to get up and do it in the morning.

I guess my big point here is I really need to remember that sometimes when I’m feeling down, and going backwards instead of forwards, I just need to take a break and let my body recover. As I’m seeing now, sometimes taking a rest does more for shedding fat and building muscle than working out…
