Now that it’s all over and I’m back at work, I have a moment or two (no more than that though
) to post about my weekend!
As I posted on Sat. night, I did indeed pass my blackbelt grading, as did everyone else in the group. It was seriously hard though, we definitely earned it! Aside from the basic techniques, there were also components to test mental strength.
After doing a whole bunch of short stances in a row, and then holding it for 30 seconds on each leg, we had to get up in to a horse stance (feet about shoulder width apart, turned inwards, and sitting down in to the stance in a sort of squat) with both arms held out in front and stand there for 5 minutes. If anyone moved from that stance (stood up, dropped their hands etc) then another 5 minutes was added. And again, if anyone moved, another 5 minutes. All up we did 12 or 13 minutes I think. Sad to say, I fell over. I was mentally determined to stay up and not penalise anyone, but my legs just gave up on me and I hit the deck. I did get straight back up in to the stance though, until my instructor (not the guy running the course) came over and raised me a little bit. I was pretty much in a sitting position, far lower than a few others in the group, so it was a huge relief when he did that…
Anyway, after that we did a few more techniques and some patterns which was really tough with legs made of jelly. The first time I did our pattern I think I skipped a fair chunk of it, but we got up and did it again and we all nailed it that time. Then we all went outside while the Grand Master grading us pondered over our results. While we were waiting, our master showed us the protocol for receiving the result – including a formal “big bow” which looks cool yet strange. I have to admit, at this point I was seriously reconsidering whether I wanted to even bother trying out for the technical director role, the grading was just that unpleasant.
So we went inside and received our certificates, belts and new uniforms and all was merry and well.
Then the training continued on Sunday with everyone sporting their new blackbelt uniform, and eventually we had the technical exam. It was basically two of our patterns joined together, and we were tested on quality of techniques, knowledge of the pattern, focus and speed. By that point I’d decided I was being silly, and got up and tried out for it, so now my official title is “NSW Assistant Technical Director”!
There are actually 3 of us, the technical director, myself and a fellow assistant, and I’m extremely pleased to be working with them, as they’re both very worthy exponents.
In other news, my dad who I also completed the course with was offered the position of Executive Secretary, which means our club will be staffed entirely by Executive members of Haedong Gumdo NSW.
Anyway, much fun had by all. The course was an awesome experience but certainly something I have no interest at all in repeating in the immediate future
It was a great group of people though, and my thanks go to all of them for helping create a fantastic experience.
